ENVIRONMENT

Our Environment Programs focus on conservation, sustainability, and community awareness. Through tree plantation drives, clean-up campaigns, and water body restoration initiatives, we promote environmental stewardship and climate responsibility. Our efforts aim to preserve natural resources and build a greener, healthier planet for future generations.

Our efforts aim to preserve natural resources and build a greener, healthier planet for future generations.

We are committed to conserving natural resources and promoting sustainability through tree plantation drives, environmental awareness campaigns, and water body restoration. Urbanization has created a greater stress on the environment and natural resources and has resulted in decreased green cover.

Urban afforestation initiatives, including the Miyawaki method, help restore green cover in cities, improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and reducing soil erosion. Rapid urbanization and pollution have severely impacted freshwater bodies. Our Lake Restoration project focuses on scientifically reviving lakes and ponds across India through community-based efforts. By collaborating with environmental organizations, we aim to create healthier ecosystems and a greener, more sustainable future for all.

METHODOLOGY

Engage

We collaborate with local stakeholders including government bodies, urban authorities, community leaders, and environmental experts and build partnerships to ensure shared ownership and long-term commitment.

Evaluate

We organize thorough site assessments to determine ecological suitability, community needs, and restoration potential. We also use scientific and local knowledge to design context-specific interventions.

Execute

We implement projects through a multi-stakeholder approach involving technical experts, volunteers, and the local community. We ensure transparency, sustainability, and ecological integrity throughout the process.

Empower

We transfer project ownership to the local community by building capacity, providing tools, and encouraging stewardship. We promote continuous care, monitoring, and adaptive management.

OUR PROGRAMS

Our environmental conservation programs focus on creating urban forests and restoring lakes and ponds. We develop dense, native green spaces in cities using the Miyawaki method. Through our lake restoration efforts, we improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, and support groundwater recharge.

Urban Afforestation – Rewilding cities for a greener tomorrow

  • Enhancing green spaces for a sustainable future We have created an Urban Forestry project in Manikandan Nagar Park, Kundrathur, Chennai with the support of our local NGO partner. The urban forest spans around 6,000 sq. ft and Miyawaki technique was used to plant a diverse array of 1,075 plants. More than 30 native species of plants were carefully selected, ensuring their suitability for the soil. Creating the forest involved extensive soil testing, followed by cleaning, soil enrichment, levelling, marking, pit drilling, and extensive monitoring.
  • This project owes its success to the dedicated efforts of more than 100 enthusiastic volunteers. They actively participated in all the activities such as cleaning, plantation and regular maintenance.
  • The project has had a ripple effect, leading to the creation of a children’s play area and improved park facilities. It has become an inviting space for the local community of Kundrathur to enjoy and foster a deeper connection with nature.

Lake Restoration – Rejuvenating waterbodies for sustainable ecosystems

  • We have restored 3 lakes in and around Chennai as part of our lake restoration program.
  • The primary purpose of this restoration effort was to enhance the capacity of the pond and biodiversity of the pond in a scientific manner.
  • The restoration activities encompassed various crucial steps:
    • Cleaning the waterbody by removing the non-degradable trash.
    • Removing invasive weeds, and desilting and deepening the waterbody.
    • Creating a double bund to strengthen the embankments and to regulate the inlet and outlet canals.
    • Creating nesting islands for birds and other wildlife.
    • Fencing the perimeter of the waterbody to prevent encroachment in the future.
  • Community engagement plays a vital role in the voluntary maintenance of the restored lakes. Around 20 volunteers actively participated in cleaning the ponds, successfully removing close to 150 kg of waste from each of the ponds.
